Overview
Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'Grandchild' is a hybrid seedling of *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict' that produces a medium-sized mound of variegated foliage. Its leaves are distinguished by dark green, streaked margins surrounding a lighter center, with a slightly shiny surface on both sides and a cordate (heart-shaped) base.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact mound 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its medium size makes it suitable for the middle of a border, as a groundcover in woodland gardens, or in containers. The dark green streaked margins provide contrast against lighter-leaved companions such as ferns or *Heuchera*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, monitor for slugs and snails, which may damage the foliage, and provide protection from deer where these animals are present.
