H. ‘Grand Slam’

Overview

Registered in 1990 by R. Benedict and H. Gowen, 'Grand Slam' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its glossy, variegated foliage with dark green margins and lighter centers. The plant forms a dense, rounded clump reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 26 inches (66.0 cm) in diameter, with leaves measuring 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide, each bearing nine vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Grand Slam' performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and reaches a mature spread of just over two feet, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in shaded beds. Its compact, mounding habit pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and shade-tolerant perennials that complement its dark green margins and glossy leaf surfaces. The purplish scapes, which can reach 21 inches (53.3 cm) in height, add vertical interest during the flowering period.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Grand Slam' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones, though its thicker leaf texture may offer some resistance.
