Overview

Registered in 1986 by K. Vaughn and introduced by P. Aden, *Hosta* 'Grand Master' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with broad, irregular white margins. The foliage is notably substantial, with leaves reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in length and 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) in width, supported by ten pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Grand Master' forms a dense clump 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (50.8 cm) tall, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its large, variegated leaves provide strong contrast when paired with fine-textured ferns or dark-leaved heucheras. The plant produces scapes up to 26 inches (66.0 cm) tall, bearing pale lavender flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Grand Master' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and manage as needed. It performs reliably in typical hosta-growing zones with adequate winter dormancy.
