Overview
Originating as a sport of *Hosta* 'George M. Dallas' and registered in 2009 by D. Beilstein and M. Zilis, 'Gothic Charm' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its blue-green foliage with dark green, flat margins. The ovate leaves, measuring 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) long and 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) wide, exhibit a slightly shiny upper surface and a glaucous bloom beneath, with 11 vein pairs and a lightly wavy, lightly corrugated texture.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a groundcover specimen. Its medium size and compact habit allow pairing with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials, though it is not suited for container cultivation due to its eventual spread.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Gothic Charm' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
