Section classII-1

Overview

Registered in 2009, this large hybrid combines *Hosta hypoleuca* with a cross of *H. longipes* var. *latifolia* and *H. montana*. 'Gosan Sunproof' is visually distinguished by its light green leaves that shift to greenish gray in sun-exposed margins, forming a broad, mound-like clump.

In the Garden

'Gosan Sunproof' is notable for its tolerance of direct afternoon sun, provided soil moisture is maintained, making it suitable for sites with more light than typical hosta-growing zones. Mature plants reach 24 inches (61 cm) in height and spread to 60 inches (152 cm) in diameter, with scapes rising 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm). Its large, ovate, lightly cupped leaves (13 inches long, 8 inches wide) with 12 to 14 vein pairs pair well with ferns, astilbes, or shade-tolerant grasses in mixed borders.

Care Notes

Maintain consistently moist soil, especially in sunnier exposures; water during dry periods. Apply balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs may damage foliage; deer typically avoid this cultivar.
