Overview
Registered in 1989, *Hosta* 'Gosan Hildegarde' is a small-sized cultivar derived from a cross between *H. 'Golden Prayers'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Ginko Craig'* (pollen parent). Its distinguishing feature is the bright yellow-green marginal variegation on narrow, dark green leaves, which exhibit a smooth sheen on the upper surface.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 8 inches (20.3 cm) and height of 6 inches (15.2 cm), 'Gosan Hildegarde' is well suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical for hosta-growing zones, and pairs effectively with small ferns, heucheras, or miniature sedges. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves—6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) wide—create a fine-textured contrast against broader-leaved companions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during active growth, particularly in containers, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. As with most small hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and protect if necessary.
