Overview

Registered in 1989, 'Gosan Gold Sword' is a small hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *Hosta alismifolia* (pod parent) and *Hosta rectifolia* 'Ogon' (pollen parent). Its distinctive foliage consists of narrow, sword-shaped leaves with green centers and yellow-green margins, reaching 7 inches (17.8 cm) in length and 1.2 inches (3.0 cm) in width, with four pairs of veins.

In the Garden

This compact cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 16 inches (40.6 cm) and a height of 8 inches (20.3 cm), with scapes extending up to 18 inches (45.7 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is well-suited for small garden spaces, rock gardens, or container plantings due to its modest size. Its narrow leaves and upright habit make it a useful companion for other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
