Overview

Registered in 2010 by P. & J. Ruh, this large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage is distinguished by its unusual coloration: green leaves with pale yellow margins that appear much more golden in early spring. The leaf surface is dull above and slightly shiny beneath, with pale yellow, slightly rippled margins.

In the Garden

'Good as Gold' forms a substantial mound 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter and 23.5 inches (59.7 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its large, corrugated leaves with 12 vein pairs provide substantial textural contrast. The pale yellow scapes reach 27.75 inches (70.5 cm) in height. This cultivar's size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders, where its gold-margined foliage complements darker-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though its moderately corrugated leaves may offer some resistance.
