Overview
Registered in 1986 by J. Harrison and the American Hosta Society, 'Goliath' is a giant-sized variegated hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive features are its substantial leaf dimensions—13 inches (33.0 cm) long and 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) wide—combined with green leaves that exhibit slight undulations along the margins and 13 to 15 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Goliath' reaches a mature spread of 61 inches (154.9 cm) in diameter and a height of 31 inches (78.7 cm), making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in larger garden beds. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns, astilbes, and hellebores. Its substantial size precludes container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents.
