Overview

Registered in 2000, this medium-sized hosta originated from a cross between *H.* 'Sea Prize' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Halcyon' (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinctive for its blue-green foliage with dark green, slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides, combined with upright, slow-growing habit.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Goldeneye' reaches 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and spreads to 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. Its cordate leaves and upright scapes (26–28 inches, or 66.0–71.1 cm) with streaked stems pair well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The plant’s compact, slow growth suits it for shaded rock gardens or small woodland settings, though it is not typically recommended for container culture due to its medium size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor regularly and use barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
