Overview

Registered in 1976 by E. Minks, *Hosta* 'Golden Wheels' is a large sport of *H. 'Wagon Wheels' distinguished by its green leaves with broad gold margins. The cultivar forms a mound 15 inches (38.1 cm) tall and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter, with individual leaves reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in length and 6 inches (15.2 cm) in width, bearing 9 to 10 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

This hosta performs best in partial to full shade, where its gold margins remain most vivid. Its large, rounded leaves and substantial mature size make it suitable as a specimen plant in woodland borders or as a focal point in shaded beds. The 15 to 18 inch (38.1 to 45.7 cm) scapes produce lavender flowers in midsummer. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its green-and-gold foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and apply controls as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
