Overview

Registered in 1984 by R. Benedict, this medium-sized cultivar arose from a self-pollination of *Hosta* 'Gold Regal'. 'Golden Torch' is visually distinctive for its green leaves with gold margins, a color pattern that reverses the typical gold-centered, green-margined form of many hostas.

In the Garden

'Golden Torch' forms a clump 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height, with leaves 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the gold margins remain brightest without scorching. This medium-sized hosta pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials; its upright habit and moderate spread make it suitable for the middle of a border or as a specimen in a mixed shade bed.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Golden Torch' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
