Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, 'Golden Rule' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. Its distinctive appearance combines intensely corrugated, blue-green leaves with broad, rippled golden yellow margins and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound, reaching approximately 24 inches (61 cm) in height and 48 inches (122 cm) in width at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green leaf centers and gold margins maintain their contrast; excessive sun may cause marginal scorching. The large, heavily textured leaves make it suitable as a specimen plant or for the middle to back of shaded borders, paired with ferns or astilbes.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Golden Rule' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
