Overview

Registered in 1976 by P. Aden, this medium-sized cultivar is distinguished by its green leaves with broad, irregular gold margins. The leaf blades reach 14 inches (35.6 cm) in length and 4 inches (10.2 cm) in width, with 16 vein pairs, while the yellow margins provide a strong contrast against the darker green center.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Golden Ruffles' forms a clump 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas with substantial gold variegation, which may scorch in direct afternoon sun. The medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees; companion plants such as ferns, astilbes, or heucheras complement its foliage texture and color.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
