Overview
Registered in 1969 by V. Cooley, this small hosta cultivar is a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Frances Williams'. It forms a compact mound of green leaves with distinct gold margins, reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter. The leaves are 5 inches (12.7 cm) long and 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide, with cordate bases and ten pairs of veins.
In the Garden
Suitable for partial to full shade, 'Golden Nugget' reaches a mature size of approximately 12 inches in diameter and 10 inches in height, making it appropriate for small garden spaces, rock gardens, or container cultivation. Its compact habit pairs well with other small perennials such as heucheras, ferns, or miniature hostas. The gold-margined foliage provides subtle contrast when planted in groups or as an edging specimen.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
