Overview
Registered in 1992, 'Golden Guernsey' is a medium-sized sport of an unidentified parent, distinguished by its green leaves with medium yellow margins. The cordate leaves measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) long by 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) wide, with 10 vein pairs and a dull underside.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact mound reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 21 inches (53.3 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a groundcover in woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain most vibrant, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size allows for use in mixed containers, though it is not typically grown as a specimen plant.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Golden Guernsey' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
