Overview

Registered in 2005 by K. Squires and Lantis Collection, with registration by P. and J. Ruh, 'Golden Gem' is a miniature hosta derived from *Hosta venusta* as the pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its very flat, mound-like habit reaching only 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) in height, combined with lance-shaped green leaves edged in greenish-yellow, slightly rippled margins.

In the Garden

'Golden Gem' is best suited for partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones. At maturity, it forms a compact, slow-growing clump 13 inches (33.0 cm) in diameter and 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) tall, with a flat, spreading profile. Its miniature size and unusual low habit make it an excellent choice for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border; it also performs well in containers. Companion plants include small ferns, *Heuchera*, or miniature sedges that share similar moisture and light requirements.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor and manage as needed in the garden.
