Overview
Registered in 1990 by M. Zilis as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sagae', 'Golden Flame' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with bright yellow margins. The leaf blades measure 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide, with ten pairs of veins, and the yellow margins are notably vivid.
In the Garden
'Golden Flame' reaches a mature diameter of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 12 inches (30.5 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders or as an edging plant. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the yellow margins remain bright without scorching. Its compact size also makes it appropriate for container cultivation. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small hostas with contrasting foliage colors.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Golden Flame' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and appropriate controls may be necessary in typical hosta-growing zones.
