Year registered2003
Section classIV-3

Overview

Registered in 2003, 'Golden Decade' is a small hosta resulting from a 1985 cross between *H.* 'Sum and Substance' (pod parent) and a seedling of *H. venusta* (pollen parent). It is a sibling to 'Leather Sheen' and is visually defined by its ovate leaves with rounded bases, green centers, and medium gold margins.

In the Garden

'Golden Decade' reaches a mature size of approximately 6 inches (15.2 cm) in leaf length and 4 inches (10.2 cm) in width, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the gold margins remain distinct without scorching, and pairs well with small ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured groundcovers. Its compact habit also suits troughs or small mixed containers.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
