Overview

Registered in 1978 by V. Grapes, this medium-sized hosta forms a dense, spreading clump 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38.1 cm) tall. Its leaves are green with distinct gold margins, each leaf measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide, with 12 pairs of veins. The yellow-edged foliage provides a bright contrast in the shade garden.

In the Garden

‘Golden Chimes’ performs best in partial to full shade, where its gold margins remain most vivid. At maturity, the plant reaches about 15 inches in height with a spread of 28 inches, making it suitable for the middle of a border or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size also allows for container cultivation in large pots.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry spells. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed.
