Overview
Registered in 1995, *Hosta* 'Gold Waves' is a small-sized cultivar originating from a cross between *H. 'Sun Power'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Gold Cover'* (pollen parent). It is visually distinguished by its green leaves with yellow-gold, slightly rippled margins, a compact mound-like habit, and fast growth rate. The cultivar was originally registered under the name *H. 'Gold Wares'*.
In the Garden
Reaching approximately 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, 'Gold Waves' forms a dense, rounded mound suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along pathways. It performs best in partial to light shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, where its gold margins remain most vivid; excessive sun may scorch the leaf edges. Its small stature makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, and it pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant groundcovers such as *Lamium* or *Heuchera*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Gold Waves' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and appropriate barriers are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
