Overview

Registered in 2002 by P. & J. Ruh as a sport of *Hosta* 'Gold Edger', 'Gold Edger Surprise' is a small hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with thin, creamy white margins. The leaf surface exhibits streaking of grey-green extending inward from the margin, and the leaf blade is ovate with a flat base, slightly rippled edges, and a flat, lightly twisted, and lightly cupped habit.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a moderate-growing, mound-like clump reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height. Its small size and compact habit make it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation. It pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras and performs best in partial to full shade.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
