Overview
Registered in 1996, *Hosta* 'Godzilla' is a giant variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Big John'* and *H. montana macrophylla*. It is visually distinctive for its large, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins and cordate bases, reaching 13 inches (33.0 cm) in length and 11 inches (27.9 cm) in width, with 18 vein pairs; the leaf surfaces are dull on both top and underside.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height and 64 inches (162.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its substantial size makes it appropriate for use as a specimen or background plant in woodland gardens and mixed borders. Given its giant dimensions, it is not suited for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Godzilla' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
