Overview

Registered in 1987 by Kuk's Forest Nursery, 'Goddess of Athena' is a small hosta distinguished by its dark green leaves with chartreuse-turning-white margins. The leaf margins measure 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide, providing strong contrast against the darker blade.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches 9 inches (22.9 cm) in height and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter at maturity, forming a compact mound suitable for the front of borders or rock gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with small ferns, heucheras, or spring bulbs. Its small size also makes it appropriate for container culture.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer weather, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Goddess of Athena' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
