Overview
Registered in 2000 from unknown parentage, 'Go for Broke' is a small hosta distinguished by its medium green leaves with creamy white margins. The foliage measures 6 inches (15.2 cm) long by 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) wide, with four vein pairs and slightly rippled, 0.25-inch (0.6 cm) wide margins that are creamy white; both leaf surfaces are slightly shiny, and the leaf base is tapered.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature clump diameter of 22 inches (55.9 cm) and a height of 12 inches (30.5 cm), with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is well suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings due to its small size. Its compact form pairs effectively with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Go for Broke' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and appropriate deterrents are recommended.
