Overview
Registered in 1986 by G. Krossa, A. Summers, and the American Hosta Society, 'Gloriosa' is a small hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its dark green leaves with narrow white margins, measuring approximately 0.12 inches (0.3 cm) wide, and its tall scapes relative to its low foliage mound.
In the Garden
'Gloriosa' forms a compact mound 17 inches (43.2 cm) tall and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter, with leaves 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 4.25 inches (10.8 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its small size makes it suitable for rock gardens, woodland edges, or the front of a shaded border. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small shade perennials; it is also well-suited to container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Gloriosa' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
