Overview

Registered in 2006, *Hosta* 'Glad Rags' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its heavy substance, very wide golden yellow margins, and an intense gold color phase in spring. The broadly ovate, dark green leaves measure 6 inches (15.2 cm) long by 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide, with 10 to 16 vein pairs and a cordate base. The margins, 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) wide, transition from golden yellow to ivory as the season progresses, while the leaf surface is slightly shiny above and dull beneath, with light cupping and moderate corrugation.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Glad Rags' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. Its modest size and heavy-textured leaves make it suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant in partial to full shade. The broad, golden margins create strong contrast against darker green foliage of ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Carex*, and the leaf substance resists tattering in exposed sites. The light green scapes, 14 to 16 inches (35.6 to 40.6 cm) tall, bear lavender flowers in mid to late summer. The plant's dense habit and moderate spread allow it to be grown in containers with adequate drainage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. *Hosta* 'Glad Rags' is moderately susceptible to slug and snail damage, though its heavy leaf substance offers some resistance; maintain clean garden debris and use barriers if pressure is high. Deer may browse foliage, and typical hosta pests such as foliar nematodes and viruses should be monitored. This cultivar is hardy in temperate climates and performs best in rich, well-drained soil with consistent organic matter.
