Overview

Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'Glacial Lake' is a large hybrid cultivar derived from *H.* 'Sagae' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Elegans' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its broad, cordate leaves of medium blue-green with slightly rippled margins and a heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces, which gives the foliage a frosted, lake-like appearance.

In the Garden

'Glacial Lake' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, where its blue-green leaves retain their glaucous coating. The tall, glaucous scapes (36–40 inches, 91.4–101.6 cm) carry pale lavender flowers in midsummer. This large specimen is well suited as a focal point in shaded borders or woodland gardens, and pairs effectively with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Glacial Lake' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures are recommended in areas with high pest pressure.
