Overview

Registered in 2009, 'Gitchigumi' is a giant hosta notable for its large, nearly round, intensely shiny blue-green leaves with a distinctive glaucous, almost pale turquoise underside. The cultivar resulted from a complex cross involving *H.* 'Sagae', *H.* 'Tokudama Aureonebulosa', *H.* 'Sun Power', and *H.* 'Gold Regal'.

In the Garden

'Gitchigumi' forms a substantial, upright clump reaching 48 inches (122 cm) in diameter and 28 inches (71 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. The leaves, up to 14 inches (36 cm) long and 12 inches (30 cm) wide, are held horizontally and feature moderate corrugation, a lightly wavy margin, and 12 to 13 vein pairs. The blue scapes rise 36 to 40 inches (91 to 102 cm) and carry numerous buds. This cultivar is best sited in partial to dappled shade, where its heavy substance and unique leaf color are most apparent. It pairs well with other bold-textured perennials such as ferns or *Rodgersia* in a woodland border or as a specimen.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The heavy leaf substance offers good slug resistance, though standard deer deterrents may be needed in areas with high deer pressure.
