Overview
Registered in 2002 by Paul Ruh, this large sport of a hybrid hosta is distinguished by its broad, medium gold margins that occasionally extend into the leaf center as yellow splashes, creating a two-tone green effect on a blue-green ground. The nearly round, heavily corrugated leaves measure up to 10.75 inches (27.3 cm) long and 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) wide, with 15 prominent vein pairs and a cordate base.
In the Garden
Reaching 21 inches (53.3 cm) in height and 27 inches (68.6 cm) in diameter, 'Gilt Edge' forms an upright, slow-growing clump suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its large size and bold foliage make it effective as a specimen or in mass plantings, where the gold margins provide contrast against darker-leaved companions such as ferns or heucheras. The light blue-green scapes, 24 to 26 inches (61.0 to 66.0 cm) tall, bear typical lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most large-leaved hostas.
