Overview
Registered in 2005, 'Gilded Cage' is a large hosta cultivar derived from a self-pollinated seedling of *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict'. It is distinguished by its broad, blue-green leaves with wide, greenish-yellow margins that are slightly rippled and moderately corrugated, with a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 29 inches (73.7 cm), with an upright, moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen plant in woodland gardens. Its large, textured leaves provide contrast alongside finer-textured perennials such as ferns or astilbes.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed.
