Overview
Registered in 1990 by H. & D. Benedict, *Hosta* 'Gil Jones' is a giant cultivar derived from self-pollination of *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict'. It is distinguished by its large, blue-green leaves with wide margins that transition from yellow to creamy white as the season progresses.
In the Garden
'Gil Jones' forms a substantial mound reaching 28 inches (71 cm) in both height and diameter, with leaves 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and its size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or in the middle to back of shaded borders. The pale scapes, which can reach 34 inches (86 cm) in height, bear flowers above the foliage in midsummer. Companion plants should be chosen to complement its large scale and avoid competition for root space.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad leaves are susceptible to damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
