Overview
Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'George W.' is a giant cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Dorothy Benedict' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Incredible Hunk' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its large, deeply corrugated blue-green leaves with gold margins, which are streaked with multiple shades of green, greenish yellow, and yellow, and feature a white underside.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'George W.' reaches a mature diameter of 34 inches (86.4 cm) and a height of 30 inches (76.2 cm), with an upright, moderate growth habit. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones and performs well as a specimen plant or in mixed shade borders, where its large, multi-colored foliage provides textural contrast. Its substantial size makes it appropriate for the back of a shade garden or as a focal point.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, corrugated leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though standard slug control measures may still be warranted in damp conditions.
