Overview
Registered in 1999 by an unknown hybridizer, 'Genesee Watchtower' is a small, mound-forming hosta distinguished by its blue-green foliage with light to medium green, slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the undersides. The leaves are moderately shiny on top, with four to five vein pairs and a tapered base, while the scapes reach 28 to 54 inches (71–137 cm) and are colored green and maroon.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 24 inches (61 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hostas, and its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants could include ferns, heucheras, or other small shade perennials that complement its blue-green foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
