Overview

Registered in 1978 by Paul Aden, this medium-sized cultivar resulted from crossing *Hosta* 'Flamboyant' (pod parent) with *Hosta* 'Intrigue' (pollen parent). 'Gene Summers' is visually distinguished by its bold, streaked variegated margins on leaves that reach 10 inches (25.4 cm) in length and 4 inches (10.2 cm) in width, with 14 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Gene Summers' forms a compact mound 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the middle of a border or as a specimen in smaller garden spaces. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its moderate size also allows for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
