Overview
Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Gemstone' is a small-sized hybrid derived from *H. venusta* (seed parent) and *H.* 'Dorset Blue' (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, broadly ovate leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, slightly rippled margins, and a lightly cupped, lightly wavy form.
In the Garden
'Gemstone' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and is well-suited for small garden spaces, rock gardens, or container cultivation. Companion plantings may include ferns, heucheras, or other small shade perennials that complement its blue foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Gemstone' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
