Overview
Registered in 2006 from open-pollinated seedlings, *Hosta* 'Gary Rivera' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its upright, arching habit and heavily rippled, blue-green leaves. The leaf margins exhibit a distinctive cream-white wire edge, while the leaf tips curl and twist, contributing to an unusually textured foliage display.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial, upright clump reaching 30 inches (76 cm) in both height and diameter, with scapes rising 30 to 38 inches (76–97 cm). The broadly ovate, cordate-based leaves measure 14 inches (36 cm) long by 9 inches (23 cm) wide, with 16 to 18 vein pairs and a dull, glaucous bloom beneath. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its giant stature makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, glaucous leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though monitoring is advisable in damp conditions.
