Overview
Registered in 1980 by P. Aden, this large hosta cultivar arose from a cross between *H.* 'Intrigue' (pod parent) and a sibling seedling (pollen parent). 'Garden Magic' is visually distinctive for its broad, blue-green leaves with margins that transition through chartreuse, cream, and white as the season progresses, creating a layered variegation effect.
In the Garden
Mature plants reach approximately 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height, with individual leaves measuring 9 inches (22.9 cm) long by 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide and bearing nine pairs of veins. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green leaf centers hold their color most reliably. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size makes it unsuitable for containers but effective as a specimen or in mixed borders.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as shoots emerge. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Garden Magic' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and appropriate barriers are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
