Overview
Registered in 1978 by P. Aden, this small-sized hosta cultivar was selfed from *H. 'Tardiflora'*. It is visually distinctive for its medium green leaves with gold margins, a compact habit, and a mature height of 10 inches (25.4 cm) with a spread of 14 inches (35.6 cm).
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Gala' performs best in partial to full shade, where its gold-edged foliage maintains good color contrast. Its small mature size makes it well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It pairs effectively with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*, and is an excellent candidate for container culture.
Care Notes
Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
