Overview
Registered in 2014 as a sport of unknown parentage, 'Funny Face' is a large hosta distinguished by its broadly ovate, medium green leaves with pronounced rippled edges and a dull surface texture on both sides. The cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter, with leaves measuring 12 inches (30.5 cm) long by 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide and bearing 13 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Funny Face' performs best in partial to full shade, where its moderate growth rate produces a substantial, rounded specimen suitable for mid-border or as a focal point in woodland gardens. Its large size and broad leaves make it effective for mass planting or as a ground cover beneath deciduous trees, though it requires adequate spacing to accommodate its eventual 34-inch spread. The green scapes rise to 36 inches (91.4 cm) and bear typical hosta flowers, though the primary ornamental value lies in the foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during establishment and throughout dry periods, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Funny Face' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones; monitor regularly and apply controls as needed.
