Overview
Registered in 2015, *Hosta* 'Frilly Frolic' is a hybrid between *H.* 'Sea Frolic' and *H. kiyosumiensis*. This giant cultivar is distinguished by its large, blue-green leaves with heavily ruffled, intensely wavy margins and deeply impressed veins, creating a strongly textured, corrugated appearance.
In the Garden
'Frilly Frolic' forms a substantial mound 25 inches (63.5 cm) tall and 59 inches (149.9 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It exhibits notable sun tolerance for a blue-green hosta, though it performs best in partial shade to filtered light typical of hosta-growing zones. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in woodland gardens and shade borders, where its bold foliage contrasts effectively with finer-textured ferns, astilbes, or heucheras. The scapes rise 34 to 38 inches (86.4 to 96.5 cm) above the foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad, textured leaves are attractive to both pests.
