Overview

Registered in 2000 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sum It Up', 'Friar Tuck' is a giant-sized cultivar distinguished by its large, blue-green leaves with broad, gold, slightly rippled margins. The leaves measure up to 15 inches (38.1 cm) long and 11 inches (27.9 cm) wide, with 15 to 16 vein pairs, a cordate base, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom beneath.

In the Garden

'Friar Tuck' forms a substantial mound 30 inches (76.2 cm) tall and 70 inches (177.8 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain brightest, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size precludes container cultivation for most gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Friar Tuck' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and take protective measures if needed.
