Section classI-1

Overview

Registered in 2015 from unknown parentage, 'Friar Fritz' is a giant, upright hosta distinguished by its large, broadly ovate leaves with dark green, slightly rippled margins and a dull underside. The variegated foliage, measuring up to 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) long and 12 inches (30.5 cm) wide, features 14 vein pairs and a lightly cupped, lightly wavy, and lightly corrugated texture.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 64 inches (162.6 cm) in diameter and a height of 28 inches (71.1 cm), with scapes extending 64 to 72 inches (162.6 to 182.9 cm) tall. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders. Pair with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad, variegated leaves.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Friar Fritz' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
