Overview
Registered in 2008 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sea Sapphire', 'Fred Wilson' is a large, upright-growing cultivar distinguished by its broadly ovate, blue-green leaves with wide, variable greenish-yellow margins that often exhibit lighter green streaking. The leaf blades are moderately cupped, lightly twisted, and moderately corrugated, with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Fred Wilson' forms an upright clump reaching approximately 25 inches (63.5 cm) in height and 26 inches (66 cm) in diameter, with individual leaves measuring 11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide. Its upright habit and substantial foliage make it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. The blue-green center and gold margin provide contrast when paired with green-leaved or fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer exposures, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Fred Wilson' is susceptible to slug damage and may require management in moist conditions; deer browsing is also a potential concern in typical hosta-growing zones.
