Overview
Registered in 2009 by A. Viette (registrant K. Walek, AHS), this giant hosta cultivar is distinguished by its large, blue-green leaves with irregular gold margins and yellow blotches, creating a freckled appearance. The leaves are ovate with cordate bases, moderately wavy, lightly corrugated, and bear a thin glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Freckles' forms a substantial mound 26 inches (66 cm) tall and 63 inches (160 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large leaf size and spreading habit preclude use in small containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrent measures are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
