Overview

Registered in 2010 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Franklin Pierce' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage. It forms a dense, mound-like clump 19 inches (48.3 cm) tall and 37 inches (94.0 cm) wide, with ovate, variegated leaves featuring medium green, slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside.

In the Garden

This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and reaches a mature spread of over three feet, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in woodland gardens. Its moderate growth rate and compact habit allow it to pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade perennials without overwhelming them. The pale green scapes, reaching 22.5 inches (57.2 cm) in height, bear attractive flowers that add vertical interest.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
