Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Cascades', 'Foxfire Zulu' is a giant, upright-growing variegated cultivar distinguished by its large, lance-shaped leaves with dark green margins and a dull upper surface. The leaves measure up to 15 inches (38.1 cm) in length and 8 inches (20.3 cm) in width, with 10 vein pairs and a slightly shiny underside.
In the Garden
'Foxfire Zulu' forms a substantial clump reaching 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height, with upright-arching foliage that gives it a commanding presence in the landscape. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its large, deeply ribbed leaves. The green scapes rise 30 to 36 inches (76.2 to 91.4 cm) above the foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
