Overview

Registered in 1983 by K.J.W. Hensen, this large cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta montana* (pod parent) and *Hosta sieboldiana* (pollen parent). 'Fountain' is distinguished by its variegated foliage: leaves feature green waxy margins with a glossy upper surface and pruinose (powdery) underside, each measuring 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) wide with 11 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

With a mature spread of 42 inches (106.7 cm) and height of 30 inches (76.2 cm), 'Fountain' forms a substantial mound suitable for mid-border or woodland garden positions. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegated leaves remain most vibrant. The scape height is variable, recorded as 50 to 0 inches (127.0 to 0.0 cm), suggesting inconsistent flowering behavior; when present, pale lavender flowers appear in midsummer. Companion plants such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Astilbe* provide textural contrast without competing for light.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from deer and monitor for slug damage, particularly in damp conditions.
