Overview
Registered in 1987 by N. Hylander and the American Hosta Society, 'Fortunei Rugosa' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage, featuring green margins and a lighter center. The leaf surface is notably rugose (deeply textured), giving the plant its specific epithet and a distinctive visual texture uncommon among variegated hostas.
In the Garden
'Fortunei Rugosa' performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegation remains stable and the leaves do not scorch. At maturity, it forms a clump approximately 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) in height and spread, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover under deciduous trees. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its muted green-and-cream coloration.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry spells to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
