Overview
Registered with the American Hosta Society in 1987, *Hosta* 'Fortunei Albomarginata' is a medium-sized cultivar of the Fortunei group, distinguished by its dark green leaves with creamy white margins. The leaf blades measure 9 inches (22.9 cm) in length and 5.75 inches (14.6 cm) in width, with 9 to 10 vein pairs, and the white marginal variegation provides a crisp contrast to the darker center.
In the Garden
'Fortunei Albomarginata' forms a substantial clump reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 56 inches (142.2 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the variegation remains stable, and is suitable for typical hosta-growing zones. The broad, rounded leaves and white margins pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials; its medium size makes it appropriate for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
